Collaboration, Presence and Performance in Virtual Learning Environments: Can Collaboration be Used to Measure Shared Presence?
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper investigates the relationship between collaborative learning performances and sense of shared presence in a virtual learning environment under particular control conditions. The results, reported here, suggest that absence of collaboration to be causally related to absence of shared presence, at for least socially constructed feeling of shared presence, as defined by Romano (2002). This result suggests a way of measuring at least a component of shared presence, though the observation of the dialogue and the behaviour of the individuals collaborating. Due to the relative small number of participants to the study these results must be considered as “a case study” that validates the approach taken and provides suggestions for the development of future studies.

Presence and Co-Presence in Collaborative Virtual Environments Extended Abstract
Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs) that can be simultaneously shared by a number of participants located in different geographical locations, provide new possibilities for communication and collaboration, with a lot of potential for the way we work and exchange information. However, in order for such systems to be successful they need to provide the participants with a compelling experie...
متن کاملPerception of Shared Visual Space: Establishing Common Ground in Real and Virtual Environments
When people have visual access to the same space, judgments of this shared visual space (shared vista) can facilitate communication and collaboration. This study establishes baseline performance on a shared vista task in real environments and draws comparisons with performance in visually immersive virtual environments. Participants indicated which parts of the scene were visible to an assistan...
متن کاملCollaboration in Tele-Immersive Environments
This paper describes a study of remote collaboration between people in a shared virtual environment. Seventeen subjects were recruited at University College London, who worked with a confederate at University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. Each pair was required to negotiate the task of handling an object together, and moving a few metres into a building. The DIVE system was used throughout, an...
متن کاملSocial Presence as a Multi-Dimensional Group Construct in 3D Virtual Environments
One of the key challenges of distributed teams is the lack of social presence resulting from multiple work locations. Virtual environments (VEs) have been viewed as a collaboration tool for distributed teams that can enhance social presence via shared collaboration space and avatars. We observed, recorded, and analyzed the VE meetings of a globally distributed team. Data were analyzed through q...
متن کاملUnderstanding Remote Collaboration in Video Collaborative Virtual Environments
Video-mediated communication (VMC) is currently the prevalent mode of telecommunication for applications such as remote collaboration, teleconferencing, and distance learning. It is generally assumed that transmitting real-time talking-head videos of participants in addition to their audio is beneficial and desirable, enabling remote conferencing to feel almost the same as face-to-face collabor...
